most of what you saw isnt a fixed game at all, its them building the rules as they go. kids in that soi mix ling ching with whatever they half-remember from school, so the hand signals drift week to week. one kid decides a palm-up means safe, next day it means you're caught, and everyone just rolls with it. that's the actual "code", not a tradition you can look up.

also worth knowing, a lot of the running games only happen because the sois dead-end near the canal. no through traffic means they can use the whole lane as a pitch. that's why it looks so organized, they've got space most bangkok kids dont. go on a weekday evening after the monks finish chanting, around 6, thats when the real chaos starts.

those hand gestures are prob from muea games, not the chase stuff people mentioned. there's a whole category of clapping and hand slapping games the girls play in a circle, usually near the spirit house, and the gestures are basically a turn order system so nobody argues about whose go it is. khee muea is the one i see most, two kids face each other and slap palms in a rhythm til someone messes up. if u go back, watch the group sitting down rather than the ones running around, thats where the real code is

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
