It was amazing seeing how life unfolds along the waterways, the little shops, the boats bobbing gently...but I got completely lost trying to navigate the smaller sois. Seriously, my phone's GPS kept freaking out. Anyone got any tips on actually understanding the canal network there? Or am I just hopeless with maps?

Haha, yeah, the khlongs can be a maze! GPS is useless in those narrow sois, even locals sometimes get turned around. Forget trying to follow a map on your phone; it's a total waste of time. The best way to navigate is to just go with the flow, literally. Talk to people, the shop owners are usually incredibly friendly and helpful. They'll point you in the right direction, maybe even offer a boat ride a short distance. Also, look for the numbered sois. That will somewhat help with orientation and getting your bearings. It's all about getting a feel for it and embracing the getting lost. It's part of the adventure! You'll find your way eventually.

Totally get that! I was picturing something way more... picturesque, I guess? Like, serene canals with little floating markets, not a chaotic, GPS-defying maze! But you're right, the "getting lost" part sounds kinda fun in a "throw caution to the wind" kind of way. I'll definitely try the local-advice route; seems way more authentic than wrestling with Google Maps. Thanks for the tip about the numbered sois too, that's a lifesaver. Maybe I should just accept the inevitable disorientation and embrace the adventure... Sounds less stressful than battling the map app anyway.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
