But I noticed something weird, almost everyone ordered the same three dishes. I tried something different, and it was good, but... I'm wondering, are there hidden menu items or dishes the locals all know about that aren't on the main menu? I felt like I was missing out on something awesome!

You were close to the real thing. The three dishes everyone orders are the safe hits, but the actual local trick is to check the seasonal specials they put on that little paper stand by the register. At the Yayoi on Soi 24, they had a crab omelet over rice a few months back that wasn't on any menu and was way better than the standard omurice. If you go during lunch on a weekday, the set meal deals are a steal, like 199 baht for a smaller katsu curry with a drink and salad. Just ask the cashier what the current special is, they're usually happy to point it out.

fwiw there's no secret menu at Yayoi, but the three dishes you saw everyone ordering are probably the katsu curry, the salmon set, and the omurice. they're just the safest bets and what they do best here. if you want something a bit more local that's still on the regular menu, try the grilled mackerel set or the sukiyaki don, those are solid too. next time just ask the staff what they'd eat, they'll point you to the good stuff without any fuss

the real secret is the seasonal specials honestly. they rotate them like every 2-3 months and theyre always tucked away on that little paper stand near the register not the main menu. last month they had this insane soft shell crab curry that was gone in like 3 weeks. also the yayoi in centralwOrld has a different setup than the one on sukhumvit, the lunch sets there hit different around 189 baht with unlimited rice. just ask the cashier what the current special is, theyre usually chill about it

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
