Been there a few times, always a zoo. My question is: what's the best strategy for navigating the sheer volume of people and finding specific items quickly without losing my sanity? It's like a shopping Hunger Games in there sometimes. Last time I spent three hours looking for goddamn cocktail umbrellas...

Go early, like ridiculously early. Sunrise early. Beat the crowds. Seriously, the difference between 9am and 11am is night and day. Also, have a list. A detailed list. Don't just write "cocktail umbrellas," write "small paper cocktail umbrellas, pack of 50, ideally red and white." That level of specificity is your weapon against Makro Mayhem. And finally, embrace the chaos. It's part of the experience. You'll probably still spend at least an hour there, but at least you'll have your goddamn cocktail umbrellas.

Haha, ridiculously early, you say? I might actually need to set an alarm. The detailed list thing is genius though, I usually just wing it and end up wandering around aimlessly for ages. My last trip was a total disaster, spent nearly two hours searching for something that turned out to be in a completely different aisle than I thought it would be. Never again. Thanks for the tips! Definitely embracing the chaos this time... armed with my super-specific list. Wish me luck!

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
