Apparently, they stock this ridiculously rare mango sticky rice that's only available there, a local secret. I'm dying to try it but also kinda terrified of the crowds it must attract. Anyone been? Is the hype real? Is it worth battling the hordes for this mythical mango dessert? Seriously considering sending a scout ahead...

the bts stop is ekkamai right? that maxvalu is actually pretty chill compared to the ones near siam. the mango sticky rice is solid but the real reason locals go is the japanese snacks section in the back, they stock stuff from the donki in tokyo for half the price. grab a pack of the matcha kit kats while you're there, just don't expect a life changing dessert experience.

i live near that maxvalu and the mango sticky rice is legit but it's not some secret menu thing. they put out a fresh batch around 8am and it sells out by 10am on weekends. the crowd is mostly aunties and office workers grabbing it for breakfast, not tourists. if you go on a weekday around 9 you'll wait maybe 5 minutes. the hype is real for the quality but the 'mythical' part is just good timing. grab a bag of the crispy pork from the deli counter while you're there, that's the actual hidden gem

if you're coming from the bts exit on the sukhumvit side, there's a shortcut through the soi 63 parking lot that drops you right at the back entrance of the maxvalu, skips the main door crowd entirely. the mango sticky rice packs are on a refrigerated shelf near the seafood counter, not the dessert section, that's where everyone misses them. grab two packs and a bottle of the cha tra mue milk tea from the cooler next to the register, it's a better combo than the coconut cream

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
