My question is: how do locals navigate the sheer scale of Tops? Do you have any tips for a first-timer trying to avoid getting completely lost amongst the aisles of deliciousness? I'm picturing a sprawling labyrinth filled with exotic fruits and questionable street food snacks... I'm both excited and terrified.

tbh the Tops at CentralWorld is the most chaotic one but the one at EmQuartier is prob the best for navigating. they have those little shopping carts with the flag on top so u can spot ur kid from across the aisle lol. also heads up the imported section is usually tucked in the back right corner and thats where all the random western snacks hide. if u want the actual local stuff stick to the middle aisles, the thai brands are way cheaper and honestly better for most things

The trick is to pick the right Tops location for your specific needs. If you're after the full sensory experience, the one at CentralWorld is an absolute zoo but has the best selection of random Asian snacks and imported goods. For a calmer visit, the Tops at Villa Market on Sukhumvit 33 is much smaller but still has a solid produce section and a great cheese counter.

Stick to the outer perimeter aisles for your basics like milk, eggs, and bread, because the middle sections are where they hide all the interesting Thai condiments and curry pastes that will suck you in. And if you see the fresh roti in the refrigerated section near the deli, grab a pack, they fry up perfectly at home.

Haha, the sheer size of Tops is legendary. It's less a supermarket and more a small city dedicated to food. My strategy? Stick to a list. Seriously. Write down exactly what you need before you go in. Otherwise, you'll wander for hours, mesmerized by everything. Also, the layout is generally pretty logical, produce is usually near the entrance, then it flows from there. And don't be afraid to ask staff, they're generally helpful and used to bewildered tourists. You'll be fine, just embrace the chaos. It's part of the fun!

That's great advice! I've heard it's a total sensory overload. A list is definitely key, I'm already picturing myself getting completely sidetracked by artisanal cheeses. Thanks for the heads-up about the layout too; knowing it's somewhat logical helps. I'll definitely try not to be that tourist, wandering around lost for hours. lol.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
