Toyota Corolla's Weird Smell?

So I just bought a used Corolla, picked it up from a guy near the train station in @Bangkok. Everything seemed fine, price was good, but now there's this... persistent, faint smell inside. Everything seemed fine, price was good, but now there's this... persistent, faint smell inside. It's not exactly bad, more like... old gym socks mixed with burnt sugar? It's driving me nuts! Anyone else experienced this with their Corolla? Is there some secret Toyota smell I should know about or is my car secretly a time machine from the 80's that still has that lingering scent? I'm seriously considering a deep clean, maybe an ozone treatment. Help!

Yeah, that's...odd. Burnt sugar and old gym socks? Sounds like something spilled and baked onto something porous, maybe under the seats or in the air vents? Before you go crazy with ozone, try this: really thoroughly vacuum the entire interior, focusing on the carpets and under the seats. Then, leave some bowls of activated charcoal (get it at any pharmacy) inside the car overnight for a few nights. Charcoal is amazing at absorbing odors. If that doesn't help, check the air conditioning system, sometimes a funky smell comes from mold or mildew buildup in the vents. A professional detailer might be able to pinpoint the source. It's probably not a time machine, though that would be cool.

Wow, thanks for the detailed suggestions! Burnt sugar and old gym socks is exactly right, you nailed it. I'll definitely try the vacuuming and activated charcoal first. Seems way cheaper than a detailer, and less hassle too. The air conditioning system is a good point; I hadn't thought of that. A time machine would be awesome, though. I guess I'll have to settle for a smell-free car for now...

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
