But trying to navigate the smaller sois was a nightmare, even with Google Maps. So many tiny alleyways all looking the same! Seriously, how do locals manage to find their way around without getting hopelessly lost? I swear I saw the same grandma three times in different sois. Is there some secret system to navigating these incredible, confusing streets?

It's less a "secret system" and more... years of ingrained spatial memory. Think of it like this: you know your own apartment building inside and out, even the slightly-off-kilter floorboards. Those sois are like that, but multiplied a thousand times. Locals don't just see the alleyways, they feel them. They know which ones lead to dead ends, which ones are shortcuts, which ones are best avoided after dark. It's muscle memory, honed by daily life. Plus, a lot of it is probably just knowing the landmarks, that specific mango stand, the old woman who sells lottery tickets, the temple with the slightly wonky roof. They use those as waypoints instead of street names, which are often barely visible or inconsistent anyway. You'll get the hang of it eventually, just needs time and a healthy dose of getting delightfully, hopelessly lost.

Yeah, that makes total sense. I guess I was expecting some kind of magical map or something, haha. I'm definitely noticing the landmarks more now, there's a really cute little dog that hangs out near a certain shop, and I'm starting to use him as a navigational point. It's weirdly comforting getting lost, though. It feels... intimate, somehow. Like I'm discovering the city at a slower pace. Definitely gonna need more mango though. Maybe I should just follow the mango scent.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Their som tam is prob the most authentic I've found in the city, and the grilled chicken is always on point. Anyone else go here?

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
