Hit up this MaxValu, the one near the BTS station, not some other one. Anyway, I'm trying to find this specific brand of coconut milk, it's got a ridiculously cute cartoon monkey on the label. Spent ages looking. Seriously, it's like they're hiding it. Do you guys have any tips on navigating the MaxValu labyrinth and finding oddly specific things, or is this just a rite of passage for expats? Seriously, I'm half convinced it's a myth.

ngl i think ur overthinking this. the maxvalu layout is a mess on purpose i swear, the one near thong lo has coconut milk in three different spots depending on the week. my go to move is just ask any staff member with a phone translator app, theyre usually bored and happy to help. worst case check the top shelf near the instant noodles, thats where they hide the weird stuff

the monkey milk is usually in the asian section near the japanese stuff, not with the regular coconut milk tbh. the maxvalu at ekkamai is bigger and has way more random brands than the thong lo one. if you still cant find it, check the small shop on sukhumvit 38 that imports stuff, they have a whole wall of weird coconut milk

If you're set on that specific brand, check the small import stores on Sukhumvit Soi 22 rather than bouncing between MaxValus. There's a little shop called Foodland Express that stocks a lot of the quirky Thai coconut milk brands that the bigger chains don't bother with. The monkey cartoon sounds like Chaokoh's limited edition run from last year, so it might just be old stock at this point.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
