Phahurat Spice Market Mystery

The smells alone are incredible, a heady mix of spices, incense, and street food. I got completely lost in the maze of tiny shops, it was amazing. Found some seriously cool fabrics, and ate the best samosas of my life. But, I couldn't find one specific spice I was looking for, a very rare type of chili pepper, my grandma uses in her legendary curry. Anyone know where I might find some incredibly obscure spices in Phahurat? Maybe a secret little shop known only to the locals?

The real trick in Phahurat isn't finding a shop, it's finding the right shopkeeper. Head to the corner of Chakraphet Road and Soi 3, there's a guy named Singh who runs a tiny stall tucked behind a fabric wholesaler. He keeps his rare stuff under the counter, doesn't put it out for tourists. Tell him you need something for a "gaeng" and that your grandmother's recipe is from the south, he'll know what you mean. If he doesn't have it, he'll point you to a family shop on the second floor of the India Emporium building, but you have to knock on the metal door.

Dang, that's a bummer about the chili pepper! Phahurat is a labyrinth, I've gotten hopelessly turned around myself. You probably already checked the bigger spice shops, but have you tried poking around the smaller, less obvious stalls? Sometimes the best stuff is tucked away, almost hidden. Maybe try venturing a little further out from the main thoroughfares, the deeper you go, the more likely you are to stumble upon something unusual. And talking to the shopkeepers is key, a little Thai (or even just enthusiastic pointing and smiling!) might unlock some hidden knowledge. Good luck with your hunt! It sounds like it's worth the effort for your grandma's curry.

You might have better luck asking about that chili at the Muslim community kitchen on the far end of Soi Phahurat 2, not the shops themselves. The women who cook there buy their spices in bulk from a supplier who only delivers at dawn, and they'll usually sell you a small bag of whatever they have if you ask nicely. I traded some homemade pickles for a bundle of rare dried chilies once, they were from a vendor who sets up near the Khlong Thom market around 5am on Sundays.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
