Seriously, what's the story behind that ridiculously enormous spread? Is it some kind of local custom to just go big or what?

i think it's partly because thai hotels love showing off with food, like a status thing. the sivalai group specifically caters to big families and groups so they pack the buffet to keep everyone happy. for a quieter bite, try the khao tom at jok prince on sukhumvit soi 26, it's open late and feels way more local

yeah the sivalai breakfast is a trip, but it's not a bangkok thing really. it's more of a hotel chain thing where they think quantity = value for money, especially with chinese tour groups who expect a massive spread. i'd skip it and walk over to on lok yun on charoen krung, it's been open since the 1930s and they do a simple thai breakfast with kaya toast and soft boiled eggs for like 80 baht. way more bangkok than fighting over a waffle station

honestly the breakfast thing at sivalai place is more about the hotel group's whole vibe than thai culture. they're owned by the same folks who run some of those massive chinese hotel chains so they just import that "more is more" philosophy. if you want a proper thai breakfast go grab some jok (rice porridge) from the street vendor on sukhumvit soi 8, way cheaper and actually tastes like bangkok

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
