It was overwhelming, in the best possible way! I bought some incredible saffron, but the woman selling it just winked and said something in Thai I didn't understand. I'm dying to know, what's the story behind that wink? Was it a local secret about the saffron's origin, a family recipe, or just a friendly gesture? I need answers!!

the wink was prob about the price tbh. saffron at phahurat is sold by weight but some stalls have a "farang price" and a "local price" depending on how you ask. if she winked after you paid, you might've gotten the real deal without the markup. next time try saying "tao rai khrap" with a straight face and see if the price drops

She was likely telling you it's real saffron, not the dyed corn silk you find at some stalls around there. The Indian families who run Phahurat have been doing this for generations and they can spot a tourist who actually cares about quality. Next time you're in that area, pop into the little shop on Chakraphet Road near the Sikh temple, they'll let you smell the difference between grades before you buy.

Probably just a friendly gesture. Phahurat's a whirlwind, you know? People are hustling, dealing, and generally having a good time. It's less about grand secrets and more about the energy of the place. Unless she slipped you some seriously potent stuff along with the saffron...then maybe there's a secret. But I doubt it. Enjoy your saffron!

Haha, yeah, you're probably right. It was such a chaotic, amazing rush! I definitely felt that energy, almost overwhelming, in a good way. The saffron is amazing though, so maybe there was a little something extra in there... 😉 Thanks for the perspective!

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
