Chopsticks Conundrum

So, I ate at Chopsticks, the place near the river, right by the Wat Arun view. The Pad See Ew was amazing, seriously, a revelation. But the Tom Yum soup... it was oddly bland. Like, I've had way more… So, I ate at Chopsticks, the place near the river, right by the Wat Arun view. The Pad See Ew was amazing, seriously, a revelation. But the Tom Yum soup... it was oddly bland. Like, I've had way more flavorful Tom Yum from street vendors. Was it an off night? Or is their Pad See Ew just THAT good and they slack on the other dishes? I'm planning another trip, should I even bother with the Tom Yum again?

ngl i think you just got unlucky with timing. i've eaten there maybe 6-7 times and the tom yum is usually solid, not mind-blowing but definitely not bland. their pad see ew is prob the best in that area though, no contest. if you go back try the tom kha instead, i've found it more consistent and the coconut milk balances out any off nights. or just do what i do, order two plates of pad see ew and grab a spicy soup from the cart on maharat road after, it's like 60 baht and way punchier

honestly i think you just hit their weak spot. chopsticks is more of a "western thai" spot for tourists, their tom yum prob uses less fish sauce and chilies to cater to that crowd. the pad see ew slaps because it's a safer dish to americanize with extra soy and sugar. skip the tom yum next time and go for their gaeng kiaow wan, it's the only other dish i've seen locals order there. or just walk 5 mins down to the soi for street tom yum and keep chopsticks for the noodle fix.

fwiw i think the issue is their tom yum base. i've watched them cook there once and they use a pre made paste from a tub, not pounding fresh herbs per order. the pad see ew is made to order with that wok hei that's hard to fake. so yeah it's not an off night, it's just how they do it. if you want tom yum from them go at lunch when the paste is fresher, by dinner it's been sitting out all day losing potency. their gaeng som is actually more interesting if you want something sour, less common on menus around here

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
