But I noticed something weird. Every table had a small, intricately carved wooden box. The staff wouldn't say what was inside. Anyone know what's the deal with those boxes? Is it some kind of local tradition I missed?

i think it's more of a status thing honestly. those boxes are custom made by a woodcarver in bang yai district, each one's slightly different. the older regulars bring their own and swap them around the table like a ritual before eating. it's not about what's inside, it's about showing you know the game. just grab one and pass it to someone next to you, they'll know what to do

The boxes are actually part of a traditional _yaa dong_ setup, a herbal liquor infusion. Yayoi's owner is from the old Bangkok families that still practice this, and the box holds a specific blend of herbs and roots meant to be steeped in your drinking water or a small shot of rice whiskey. It's not on the menu, but if you ask for _nam ya dong_ they'll bring you a separate glass to mix it into. The staff probably clammed up because they're tired of tourists treating it like a novelty instead of a digestive aid.

You're overthinking it. Those boxes hold the house-made prik nam pla, the fish sauce with chilies and garlic that Yayoi ferments in clay pots out back. The carving lets air circulate so the flavors keep developing on the table. I've seen the owner's son refill them from a big jar near the kitchen door, no mystery there.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
