you're not losing it, that hum is the old generator room under the lobby, they never fully shut it down because the basement floods if the pumps stop running. it's been doing that since the building was a godown, the owner told me once it's cheaper to let it hum than fix the drainage. if it's really bothering you, the riverside pier at tha chang has a late night boat noodle spot that's open till 2am, the sizzle of the wok will drown it out way better than earplugs. and honestly, the sticky rice regret is real, but a cold chang from the 7-11 on the corner usually sorts me out by 1am.

the over stay hotel huh, that place is actually a repurposed warehouse from the 70s, the old freight elevators and pumps are still in the walls. that hum is probably the river current vibrating through the concrete pilings, the chao phraya moves way faster than it looks at night. if it gets creepy, grab a seat at the rooftop bar and listen to the boats instead, way better soundtrack. and yeah, mango sticky rice is a trap, i always regret it by midnight

I've stayed there a couple times, that hum is just the old pipes and the river sloshing around the foundation, it's been doing that for years. If it keeps you up, the front desk has foam earplugs for free, just ask. And yeah, skip the third mango sticky rice next time, your stomach will thank you around 3am.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
