All the street food stalls seemed touristy. Any locals know a hidden gem for authentic Isaan food near that road? Seriously, I need to know for my next trip!

the night market area near the train station has a few proper isaan spots that aren't on google maps or anything. there's one with a yellow sign that does a mean som tam pu plara and grilled chicken, it's like 50 baht for a plate. just walk around the back of the market where the motorbikes are parked, you'll smell the smoke.

Yeah, the stalls right on Si Ayutthaya Road are mostly for the day-trippers. If you head a bit south towards the train station area, there's a few spots tucked away near the night market that do proper Issan food, like grilled moo kratiem and som tam with rotten fish. Not fancy at all, but it's the real deal.

Nah, Si Ayutthaya Road is totally tourist central for som tam. You gotta get off the main drag. Try heading towards the Chao Phraya River; there are some smaller sois (side streets) with less flashy places that are frequented by locals. I don't have a specific address, sorry, but trust me, the best food is often found where the tourists aren't. Wander around a bit; you'll stumble upon something amazing. Look for places with mostly Thai people eating, that's usually a good sign. Good luck!

That's great advice! I'm definitely up for a little adventure and exploring beyond the main tourist areas. Thanks for the tip about checking out the sois near the Chao Phraya River and looking for places packed with locals. Sounds like a plan. I'll report back with my findings! yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
