Go-Go Bar Etiquette?

It's my first time in Thailand, and honestly, I'm a little nervous about the whole go-go bar scene. I've seen videos, but they're...varied in their accuracy, to say the least. My question is: what's the unspoken etiquette? How much is "too much" interaction? Is it cool to just grab a drink and observe, or is that considered rude? I wanna have a good time, not offend anyone. Also, any tips for a first-timer would be appreciated! I don't want to look like a complete tourist...which I kinda will be anyway.

Skip the main drag bars at first and walk down the side soi next to Cowboy. There's a smaller place called Soi 23 that's less packed with loud music and you can actually sit and have a beer without the full sensory assault. It's a better warm-up before you hit the bigger spots.

When you do go in somewhere, sit at the bar counter, not the tables near the stage. The bar gives you a good view and makes it easier to just watch without anyone thinking you're trying to chat them up. Bartenders there are usually friendly and won't push you to buy lady drinks.

Cash is king everywhere. Most places charge around 150 baht for a beer and you'll want smaller bills for tipping the waitress when she brings your drink. 20 baht per round is standard. Don't bother with cards, they'll just look at you funny.

You'll stand out less than you think. Half the guys in Soi Cowboy are first-timers, so nobody's judging you for looking around. Grab a Singha at the bar counter, tip the waitress 20 baht when she brings it, and just watch the show.

If a dancer smiles or waves at you, a nod back is fine. You don't have to buy her a drink or pay the barfine unless you want her sitting with you. The lady drinks run around 150 to 200 baht, so it's not a huge deal if you do, but there's no pressure.

One thing I'd mention is keep your phone in your pocket. Taking photos or videos inside is a quick way to get kicked out or yelled at. Some places have signs, but even if they don't, assume it's not allowed.

For a first timer, start at a place like Long Gun or Baccara earlier in the evening, like 8 or 9 PM. It's less crowded and you can ease into the vibe before it gets rowdier later.

One thing nobody mentioned yet is that the drink prices go up after a dancer sits with you. Your beer might be 150 baht, but hers will be closer to 200 if you buy her one. Some girls will try to push for multiple lady drinks quickly, so pace yourself and don't feel bad saying "next song" if you're not interested in chatting longer.

If you're nervous about getting ripped off, stick to the bigger bars like Baccara or Tilac. They're more established and less likely to mess with your bill. The smaller places on the ends can be hit or miss with overcharging tourists who look unsure.

Also, the barfine system is worth understanding before you go in. If you want a girl to leave with you, you pay the bar a fine usually around 600 to 1000 baht, plus whatever you agree with her. But don't feel like that's expected on a first visit, most people just sit and watch.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
