honestly the community center is tucked behind the main temple building, not near the entrance like you'd expect. if you're facing the main ubosot, take the left side path past the monks' quarters and you'll see a small soi that dead ends at a green gate. that's it. next time grab a khao man gai from the lady with the cart on Bamrung Mueang just before the klong, she's there til about 2pm and it's like 40 baht for a solid meal

You had the right idea following the canal, just went a bit too far. The community center is actually on Trok Sin, the little lane that branches off Bamrung Mueang about 100 meters before you reach the temple's main wall. There's a yellow shophouse on the corner selling fried bananas, that's your landmark. Walk past it and you'll see a two-story wooden building set back from the road with a small sign in Thai and English. The street art you found was probably by a guy named Art, he's been painting those murals for the past three years and sometimes sells prints out of the center on weekends.

The community center is actually on the soi that runs parallel to the canal, not directly inside the temple grounds. If you walk along the klong from the Bamrung Mueang side, you'll see a faded blue sign about 50 meters before the small bridge. That's the entrance, easy to miss because it just looks like someone's house. The mural you found was probably by the artist who does work for the local youth group there, they've been adding new pieces every few months.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
