The machine kept rejecting them. I tried everything, different slots, different orientations, even pleaded with it. I ended up having to call someone over, and felt totally mortified. The employee, bless her heart, just laughed and said it happens all the time. But still! What's the deal with these finicky mango-detecting sensors?

you gotta remember that most thai grocery store scales are set to metric in grams but the produce codes are tied to specific weight ranges. a ripe mango can be like 250-400g depending on the variety, and if yours is a bit bigger than the standard nam dok mai they have in the system it just freaks out. next time try the regular lane at the gourmet market in emquartier, their self-checkout has a manual weight entry option that saves you the hassle

i stopped using self-checkout at tops after i watched a guy's entire bag of oranges get flagged and he just walked away lol. the produce section at the gourmet market in emquartier has a scale that prints a barcode sticker, way easier, and their mangoes are usually better quality anyway. if you're heading to the beach, stop at the fruit stand on the corner of sukhumvit 55, they sell bags of sliced mango for 20 baht and you skip the whole checkout ordeal

Tops self-checkouts have this weird quirk where they expect items to sit perfectly flat on the scale. If your mango has any curve or stem sticking out, it shifts the weight reading and triggers the error. I've started putting a folded receipt under one side to level things out and it works about 80 percent of the time. The cashiers at the branch on Soi Thonglor are used to it and usually have the override code memorized, so don't feel bad about flagging them down.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
