Bangkok's Hidden Alleyways

The vibrant street art, the tiny family-run noodle shops, the sounds of kids playing... it felt like a world away from the bustling city. I spent hours just wandering, soaking it all in. One thing though, I couldn't find a decent coffee shop anywhere! Is there a secret caffeine haven I missed?

tbh the best coffee in that whole riverside maze isn't even in a proper cafe. there's this old guy on Soi Thewet who runs a cart outside the flower market from like 6am to noon. he does this o-long filter thing with condensed milk that's nothing like the chain shops. 35 baht and he'll chat your ear off in broken english about his son in chicago. just look for the blue umbrella and the line of motorbike taxi drivers

honestly the coffee scene near the river is kinda spotty yeah. if you're still in that area try walking up to Soi Samsen 3, there's this tiny spot called Nana Coffee Roasters that's easy to miss. they do a solid cold brew and the owner's real chill about letting you hang out for a bit. just look for the faded blue sign with no english on it

ngl the river backstreets are magic for everything except coffee. if you're still in that maze, try weaving toward Trok San Chao Rong Kueak, it's this tiny lane off Charoen Krung. there's a place called Gallery Drip that's basically a hole in the wall with a single espresso machine and some stools. they use beans from a farm up north and the iced latte is like 60 baht, which is wild for that quality. just follow the smell of roasted peanuts from the old lady's cart next door

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
