Seriously though, the mini-bar prices were insane. I almost choked on my complimentary fruit platter when I saw the bill for a single can of soda. I'm curious, is this a common thing in luxury hotels, or was I just unlucky? Did anyone else get fleeced like I did? Or am I just cheap...?

the real hack is asking room service for a pot of hot water and bringing your own instant coffee or tea bags. most luxury hotels here won't bat an eye at that request. also check if your room has a pantry or butler service, some of the older places like the oriental or sheraton grande sukhumvit let you order stuff from their supermarket at normal prices through the concierge

ngl the mini-bar tax is just part of the luxury hotel experience here. even the w bkk had a tiny chang beer for 350 last time i was there. pro tip: most of these hotels have a 7-11 or family mart within a 5 minute walk, just pop out and grab a bag of snacks for 200 baht total. also check if your room has a minibar key, some places let you empty it and use it as your own fridge if you ask

honestly it's not just bangkok, luxury hotels everywhere do this. but the trick here is most of these places have those little grocery stores in the lobby or nearby that sell the same stuff for like 20 baht. i just grab a couple of waters and sodas before going up to the room, nobody bats an eye

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
