Heard it's amazing for street food, but I'm a total lightweight when it comes to spice. Any recommendations on dishes that pack a punch but aren't gonna melt my face off? Also, any tips on navigating the crowds and finding the best hidden stalls? It's gonna be a culinary adventure... I hope.

Wat Mai Wichian, huh? Sounds like a plan. For milder spice, look for things like Pad See Ew, the sweet soy sauce usually balances the chili well. Or maybe Kuay Teow Reua (boat noodles), you can usually ask for less chili. Plenty of noodle soups around there too, you can control the spice level easily.

Navigating the crowds? Just go with the flow, honestly. It's busy but not insanely chaotic. Peak times are gonna be dinner, naturally. Best hidden stalls? There aren't really hidden ones, it's all pretty out in the open. Just wander around a bit, check out what smells good. Don't be afraid to point at things and ask the vendors, most speak at least some English. Have fun! You'll find something delicious, I'm sure of it.

Great tips! Thanks so much. Pad See Ew is definitely on the list now, sounds perfect. I appreciate the heads-up about the crowds, going with the flow is my usual approach anyway, haha. Pointing and asking is a great idea, I'm pretty comfortable with that. Excited to try some boat noodles too, less chili is key for me. Looking forward to it!

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
