Finding Authentic Thai Food?

Ate incredible street food, the best Pad See Ew of my life, hands down, but I couldn't find a single place that felt truly, authentically local. Like, where do the actual residents eat? All I saw were tourist traps, or places geared towards other expats. Seriously curious, where do the people who live here actually grab a bite?

hard agree on the soi thing but also try looking for places that only do one dish and close when it's gone. like a spot that just does tom yum noodles from 6am til they run out around 10.30. there's a lady on soi 51 off charoen krung who does this perfect boat noodles with blood cube and garlic oil, no name, just a blue awning. she's packed every morning with folks from the nearby offices and apartments. if they only cook one thing and sell out fast, that's your real local joint

the delivery driver trick is solid but i'd add go during lunch hours on a weekday, that's when the office workers flood the spots that don't bother with tourists. or find a soi with a bunch of food carts that all serve the same thing, like 3 stalls right next to each other doing nothing but khao man gai, the one with the shortest queue is usually the best because locals know to grab it and go

fwiw the whole soi thing is real but you gotta know which soi to pick. on sam sen road near bang khun phom there's this stretch of sidewalk stalls that do nothing but khao kha mu (stewed pork leg) and a few grilled meats, no english anywhere, just thai aunties yelling orders. i ate there three days straight and paid like 45 baht each time. the key is look for the ones with the plastic stools that are slightly broken, those are the ones that have been there for decades

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
