ngl the whole behind the scenes thing is kinda a mess. most hotels here outsource to a third party courier service, and they're the ones who lose stuff half the time. the hotel itself just files a report and waits, so the real delay is that courier not picking up the phone. i'd say 3 to 5 days is the norm if it's just misplaced, but if it went to the wrong property, could be a week plus. next time ask for the tracking number of the transfer, they usually have one but don't volunteer it. also, tip the bell desk early, they remember that when shit goes sideways.

hotels here are wild about the paper trail but terrible at the actual looking. my tip is to check the CCTV with them. every decent place has cameras at the lobby and the bell desk, so if your bag vanished after you handed it over, they can literally rewind and see which staff member took it where. most front desk folks won't offer this, but if you ask nicely for the security manager, they'll pull it up. that's how i found mine stuck on a luggage cart behind the banquet hall, someone just forgot to unload it. took about 4 hours total once we saw the footage.

if it's the airport side though, get the baggage service office at suvarnabhumi on the phone before you even leave the arrivals hall. they're open 24/7 and the desk people actually have access to the handler's internal system, unlike the call center. and don't leave without the "property irregularity report" number, it's different from the claim form number. that one detail saved me a huge headache when i called back the next day. average for a domestic mixup is 3 days, but if it went to don mueang by mistake, add a day for the truck run between airports.

straight up, if it's the hotel's own fault, like a bellhop mixup, they'll usually sort it within a day or two, but don't expect them to volunteer that info. the real trick is to ask for the "lost & found ledger" at the front desk, they have a physical book here, not just a computer, and they hate showing it. i've seen bags stuck in the wrong wing for days because housekeeping never updated the log.

for airlines, the bangkok airport's central lost luggage office is at suvarnabhumi, basement level near the train link. you can actually walk in and talk to a person, don't rely on the phone line, it never picks up. average is 5 days if it's domestic, but if it went through a transfer, add 2 more. also, most hotels here use a third party for airport pickups, and that's where stuff really vanishes. next time, ask the concierge for the courier company's name before you hand over the bag, then call them directly instead of the hotel. that cut my wait from a week to two days once.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
