I've seen pictures, but do the pastries actually taste as heavenly as they look, or is it all just Instagrammable fluff? I'm worried about the whole experience being underwhelming after building it up in my head.

which hotel? that matters a lot. if you're at the mandarin oriental or the siam, the pastries are legit made in house by proper pastry chefs, not just for show. the ones at the banyan tree can be hit or miss, i've had dry cakes there before.

if you want the real high tea scene in bangkok, skip the hotel and go to the lobby at the waldorf astoria on wireless road. their head pastry chef used to work at a michelin starred restaurant in paris. the tea selection is better too, they have actual loose leaf stuff instead of tea bags. but honestly even the best high tea is still just tiny sandwiches and cakes, it's never gonna be some transcendent experience.

You haven't said which hotel, but if you're staying somewhere ridiculous like the Siam or Capella on the river, book high tea for the first day and a proper lunch at the chef's table restaurant for the second. The pastry teams at those places rotate seasonal menus based on what's actually in market at Or Tor Kor, so you will get things like mangosteen eclairs or lemongrass panna cotta that you won't find anywhere else. The real test is the kaffir lime madeleine, if it's still warm and has that sharp citrus pop you know they're baking in house that morning.

ngl you're overthinking this. even if the pastries are mid the whole ritual of sitting in some insane lobby with gold leaf ceilings while someone in white gloves pours your tea is an experience in itself. i've done the afternoon tea at the st. regis and the view from the 15th floor is worth the price of admission alone, pastries were solid but not the main event

if you really want to test the quality order the plain croissant. any hotel that can nail a simple croissant is prob making everything else from scratch. if it's dry or tastes like 7-11 forget the rest of the menu

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
