i'd say late afternoon is actually underrated, around 4pm. the heat's dying down and the market stalls start restocking for the evening, so there's fresh stuff coming in. plus you can catch the sunset from the tower after the worst of the crowds have left, it's quieter than the morning rush for sure

ngl the market's best around 3pm on a wednesday or thursday. most tourists are off doing the khao san road thing so it's chill, and the fabric vendors are winding down so they'll actually give u better prices on leftover bolts. grab a coconut ice cream from the cart near the Bobae Tower entrance while you browse, it's 20 baht and hits different in that heat

fwiw i think early afternoon around 1pm is the sweet spot if you're not shopping for fabric. the wholesale crowd has thinned out and you can actually walk through the aisles without getting your elbows knocked. the food court on the 4th floor of Bobae Tower does a killer khao man gai for like 50 baht, way better than the tourist spots near the river. just watch your bag, the soi dogs near the market entrance get territorial around lunchtime

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
