Ouch. That's a... specific concern. I'd suggest sticking to the sidewalks as much as possible, especially in areas known for tourist crowds. And maybe pack some Preparation H just in case. Bangkok's a blast, but it's definitely got its own brand of unexpected hazards.

That's a cool observation! Bangkok's neighborhoods can be incredibly tight-knit, almost familial. It wouldn't surprise me if those shopkeepers all knew each other – generations of families running businesses in the same area is totally normal there. Plus, Charoen Rat Road is pretty old, so that sense of community probably goes way back. Secret society? Maybe. Maybe not. It's Bangkok, after all. Anything's possible, but also...most things aren't some elaborate conspiracy. It's more likely just a really strong local network. But hey, keep an eye out... you never know what you might find lurking beneath the surface in a city like that. The more likely explanation is less exciting, but probably more accurate.
