New Phra Khanong boat service

The dock is right by the old Phra Khanong market, so you can grab some grilled pork skewers while you wait. I've heard the route will actually loop back toward Wat King Kaeo instead of just running one way, which would make it handy for hitting the night market on the other side. If you're commuting to Asok, the new stop should drop you within walking distance of the MRT, but honestly the bus on Rama IV is still faster during peak hours. Give it two weeks after opening, the first few days are always chaos with the mooring lines.

I've been tracking this since they started piling in the pilings. The word from the workers is it'll run from Wat King Kaeo down to Khlong Toei pier, with a stop at the new Asok dock, so it's basically a shortcut for people who want to skip the Sukhumvit traffic mess. It's not going to be the full express boat route, more of a local shuttle, so expect it to be slower but way cheaper than a Grab. If it follows the pattern of the other khlong services, it'll run from 6am to 8pm and cost around 10 to 15 baht. I'd wait a month after it opens, they always have to work out the docking kinks.

yeah the khlong system here is super underrated for getting around. the saen saep boats already run that stretch but they're packed during rush hour, this new one might actually be calmer if it's a smaller shuttle. i'd guess it'll stop near the talat nam or the old market area, they always try to hit the food spots. if u're near phra khanong station, walking to the pier is faster than waiting for a motorbike taxi most days, just bring a mask for the smell in the dry season.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
