The spa doesn't sell it. Anyone know of similar Thai chamomile hair oils?

the oil at healthland changes by branch and sometimes by therapist, so youre chasing a moving target. i've had luck asking the senior staff at the sukhumvit soi 49 branch, they keep a logbook of supplier orders and one of them showed me the name of a distributor in the bang na area. it's not retail, but if you call ahead they'll sometimes sell a small bottle of the base oil they use, just tell them it's for personal use and mention healthland.

if you want something off the shelf, the jim thompson farm shop at sukhumvit soi 49 has a chamomile and rice bran hair oil that has that same warm, almost bready depth. it's not a dupe but it's the closest commercial version i've found that doesnt smell flat. costs around 400 baht and they stock it at the main store, not the airport outlets. ask for the one in the white pump bottle, the amber one is more floral and lighter.

fwiw that "complex chamomile" smell is prob a blend with either kaffir lime leaf or butterfly pea flower, both get that sweet-herbal depth. if ur in the old town area, the herbal pharmacy across from Wat Pho has loose oil bottles that smell exactly like that, no label, just a handwritten thai tag. they let u sniff before buying, and it's like 100 baht for a tiny bottle.

also worth asking the massage therapist for the brand name, they often get a cut from referring u to the supplier. once got a lead that way and it turned out to be a small batch maker who only sells to spas in the Silom Soi 10 area. didn't end up buying, but the trail was real.

You might be smelling a custom blend from their in-house aromatherapy supplier, a lot of the mid-range spa chains here do that and keep the recipe under wraps. For something you can actually buy, head to the morning market at Chatuchak's JJ Mall section, there's a stall selling northern Thai hair tonics with chamomile and lemongrass that has that same layered herbal scent. Or pop into the Panpuri boutique on Sukhumvit 39, their chamomile hair serum is pricier but has that warm, honeyed depth instead of the flat chamomile you get from most brands. If you're desperate, ask the therapist directly, they sometimes know the backroom brand and will sell you a bottle under the table if you tip well.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
