My question is how common is it to find a professional athlete who came from an Isan working class background in Thailand

yeah it's basically the default path for muay thai fighters. most champions started in the provinces running drills on rice sacks before they had proper gloves. the temple fair circuit is real, i've seen 8 year olds fighting for 200 baht in chonburi and the crowd doesn't blink

the thing nobody mentions is how many kids wash out though. for every buakaw there's a hundred guys who got brain damage and no education and end up back in the village working construction. the rags to riches story is real but the odds are brutal, way worse than UK football academies

honestly it's super common in Muay Thai especially. you see kids from Buriram or Udon Thani training at camps in Bangkok by like age 10, sending money home to their families. Buakaw Banchamek is probably the most famous example, grew up poor in Surin and now he's a global name

football's similar too, a lot of the Thai national team guys came from Isan villages. Chanathip Songkrasin is from Samut Prakan but his family was working class, and plenty of others have that exact rags to riches arc. the difference is just that the money isn't UK level so the "riches" part is more modest, like a decent house in Bangkok instead of a mansion

it's probably even more common in muay thai than football tbh. the smaller weight classes are dominated by isan kids because fighting is one of the few ways out for a poor family from khon kaen or sisaket. you'll see kids fighting for 500 baht at a local temple fair before they're 12 and if they're good a scout picks them up for a bangkok gym

the big difference from the uk is that thai athletes rarely get the crazy generational wealth. even a top fighter like saenchai drives a modest toyota and lives in a normal condo. the real money is in japan or the ufc for muay thai guys, or playing in the j league for footballers. chanathip made decent money at consadole sapporo but nothing compared to a premier league benchwarmer

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
