What do you think about Khaosan Road?

tbh a month there is impressive, i live in bangkok and even i cant handle more than a weekend. the backpacker bubble is real but if u liked it that much try walking over to banglamphu market in the morning, way less tourists and u can get khao tom for like 40 baht instead of the overpriced pad thai on khaosan. also the soi rambuttri tip above is solid, that little alley is a lifesaver when u need quiet but still want a beer within stumbling distance

a month is wild, i tapped out after 3 days lol. the backpacker vibe is fun for meeting people but the constant noise & smell of drains got old fast. if u liked it that much u might dig soi rambuttri just off khaosan, its way more chill but still has good food stalls and cheaper beer

honestly khaosan is a blast for a night or two but a whole month sounds exhausting lol. the street food is legit and the vibe gets wild after dark but during the day its just tourists and touts trying to sell u the same shitty singlet. i prefer chilling at a riverside place nearby when i need a break from the chaos

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
