Is Grab really cheaper than calling a taxi?

Therefore once in Bangkok I had in mind to use Grab only to visit the city. One day I was leaving the hotel for Gran Palace and no Grab driver was accepting the ride. I didn't want to waste time so I asked the reception to book a taxi for me. In literally one minute the taxi was there, but what was really surpring is that the ride cost 106 baht while on Grab it cost 251 baht. I don't know if it's because the driver was already waiting close to the hotel or what. Just wanted to know if anyone had a similar experience

the hotel thing is key. Most hotels in Bangkok have a deal with taxi drivers waiting nearby, they get a kickback or a guaranteed fare so they actually want those calls. The meter price is way lower than Grab but the hotel's cut is already factored in somehow, it's still a better deal for you.

I've had the opposite problem too, where a taxi refused to take me to a short destination like Chinatown because they'd rather wait for a longer fare. Grab at least forces someone to accept it if you set the price right. For the Grand Palace specifically, I'd just take the river boat next time, it's 15 baht and drops you right at Tha Chang pier.

ngl the 106 vs 251 baht difference is pretty standard. grab's pricing algorithm includes a "convenience tax" plus surge, while a metered taxi from your hotel is basically getting the base rate with no markup. hotels usually have a taxi stand or a preferred driver waiting outside, so they're not charging you extra, they just want the business.

one thing people miss is that grab's price is dynamic based on demand in that exact moment. if you're near a major hotel or tourist spot around lunch or rush hour, the price jumps. a taxi waiting at the hotel stand is basically idle and happy to take a 100 baht fare rather than sit there. for the grand palace specifically, i'd actually recommend taking the BTS to saphan taksin and then the chaophraya express boat to tha chang pier. it's like 60 baht total and you skip all the traffic around sanam luang, which is a nightmare anyway.

Yeah that tracks. Grab tends to be 2x to 3x more expensive than a metered taxi for the exact same route, especially on shorter trips inside the city. The convenience fee is real, plus Grab's dynamic pricing kicks in when demand is high or supply is low.

The thing with the Grand Palace area is that traffic around there is a nightmare, so drivers often decline those trips on Grab because they know they'll be stuck for ages. A taxi hailed from the street or booked through your hotel doesn't have that same rejection option, and they're legally required to use the meter. Just make sure the driver actually turns the meter on, some will try to negotiate a flat fare instead.

For longer trips or going to the airport, I'd still check Grab because the fixed price can protect you if you hit bad traffic. But for short hops around central Bangkok, flagging down a taxi or having your hotel call one is usually the smarter play.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
