Did a helmet law go into force today or yesterday?

I always take motorbike taxis and have never had to wear a helmet or even had one offered

Today everyone has one on and the motorbike person said I had to wear it ( obviously if it's someone's bike and they tell you that if you want to ride you wear it, no worries on that)

Did the law suddenly change or go into effect today

I see 1000% more today helmets then a normal day in Bangkok

yeah this is the classic "helmet crackdown" that happens when some high-ranking cop wants to show they're doing something. usually lasts a week or two, then it's back to normal.

the real tell is if they're stopping tuk tuks too, which they don't usually bother with. i saw a checkpoint near nana bts this morning and they were flagging down literally every motorbike, even the ones with helmets on.

if u want to skip the hassle, just walk a block off the main road before grabbing a taxi. the checkpoints are almost always right at the big intersections or bts exits, so the drivers avoid those spots anyway once they see the cops. also, some of the win (the motorbike taxi stands) have their own spare helmets they'll lend u for free if u're a regular, just ask.

nah the law didn't change, this is just one of those random enforcement days. the cops do these sweeps every few weeks, especially around tourist spots and big intersections like asok or phrom phong. they set up checkpoints and fine both rider and passenger, so drivers suddenly turn into safety advocates.

if u take motorbike taxis regularly, just keep a cheap helmet in your bag or grab one from the driver if they offer. most of them have a spare under the seat, but they'll charge u extra 20-30 baht for it. honestly it's worth it just to avoid the 500 baht fine and the hassle of arguing in thai.

btw the rule's been on the books since the 70s, they just never enforce it unless there's a crackdown or a big accident in the news. this'll prob die down in a week or two, then everyone forgets again.

so it wasn't just me, i noticed the exact same thing this morning on my way to work. there's a checkpoint set up basically every day now near asok bts, they're not even hiding it, just parked right under the stairs.

the drivers are panicking more than usual because the fine went up recently i think, like 500 baht now instead of the old 400. i heard from one of the guys at my usual win that they're also starting to impound bikes if the driver doesn't have a license, which is new. so it's not just about the passenger helmet, they're checking everything.

honestly the cheapest move is to just buy your own helmet at a shop near the mo chit weekend market, they sell basic ones for like 100 baht. leave it at your regular taxi stand, the drivers will hang it on the post for you and remember whose is whose. way better than paying 30 baht every single ride for a rental that smells like someone else's sweat.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
