I think my teeth are ok overall but left my home to study abroad without having a professional teeth cleaning before and it's well overdue by now. Any recommendations? Are there things I should be aware of in terms of Thai dental practices, like do I need to book long ahead of time, is it expensive etc. thanks!

Thong Lo has a bunch of independent clinics that are less rushed than the mall ones. I go to Smile Signature near Thong Lo BTS and they do a thorough scaling for 1200 baht, no upselling. Just call a day or two ahead, they speak English fine. January is high season so avoid the first week if you can, that's when everyone's booking in.

smile 2 me dental in silom is where i go, it's near sala daeng bts. cleanings are about 1000 baht and they don't push extra stuff on u. january is busy so book at least a week ahead online, their website has a booking form in english. one thing nobody mentions is some clinics charge extra for the "polishing" paste if you want it to taste less chalky, just ask upfront if it's included

bangkok dental hospital on asok is solid for cleanings, walk-in friendly but booking a week ahead is safer. a basic scaling & polish runs around 800-1500 baht, way cheaper than back home. just avoid the super touristy clinics near khao san, they mark up prices. thai dentists are generally thorough with sterilization so don't stress about that

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
