it's not just decoration tbh. three slices is a thai thing for balance - the way the cuts are made lets the cucumber release a bit of moisture which actually helps with the overall taste of the meal. also helps cool the palate if you're eating something spicy. you'll see it with kao man gai, pad thai, pretty much everywhere. some places use carrot instead but cucumber is the standard

honestly it's just an old school thing, kinda like how they serve you a cold towel at some places. the three slices are supposedly for luck or balance or whatever but i think most places just do it because that's how it's always been done. my grandma used to say it's to clean your palate between bites but honestly i just eat them first cause i'm hungry

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
