Arrive bangkok at 5am... where to go?

At 5am with a 3-year-old, I'd head straight to a 24-hour family-friendly spot like the lobby of a big hotel that's not yours. The InterContinental or the Anantara Siam have nice lounges where you can buy a coffee and let the kid nap on a couch without anyone bothering you. If they're awake, the Chatuchak Weekend Market opens around 7am but the food section in the north-west corner is already buzzing by 6 with vendors setting up, and it's cooler and less crowded than the main aisles. You can grab a khao tom and some fried chicken while the little one stares at the birds in the nearby park.

honestly just go to any early morning market like talad phahurat or the flower market near memorial bridge. they're open all night and it's fascinating to wander through at dawn. grab some khanom bueng from a street cart and let the kid watch the chaos of trucks unloading flowers. by 7am you can head to a nearby park like rommaninat for the playground and shade. beats sitting in a hotel lobby tbh

don't bother with a market if the kid is cranky. head to a mall that opens early, like terminal 21 asok opens at 10 but central embassy has a gourmet market open from 7. grab some pastries and let the 3yo run around the empty walkways upstairs. the aircon is a lifesaver at that hour and you can find a bench near the kids play area that's closed but has soft flooring. if they fall asleep just camp out at the food court tables

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
