Best costume shop in BKK? post halloween :(

I'm going to a costume party, and need to dress up as a Jamaican. I'll spare you the details, but please help me out hahah. I guess step one: acquire dreadlocks. yeah Saphan Lek is solid but if you're staying closer to downtown, check out the costume rental shops around Siam Square, soi 5 area. they do full jamaican kits sometimes, rasta hats and all, and you can just return it after the party. way less hassle than buying if you only need it one night.

for the dreads specifically, MBK has a few stalls on the 4th floor near the phone repair section, weird but true. they sell those braided hair extensions cheap, like 100-150 baht, and you can pin them under a beanie or tam. pair that with a bright yellow or red polo and you're basically done, nobody's checking the details at 2am anyway.

honestly skip the tourist stalls around Khao San for this, you'll pay triple and get cheap plastic. head to Saphan Lek, the market near the old city moat, tons of wig and accessory shops crammed together. they have proper dreadlock caps, not just the stringy ones, and you can bargain them down to like 200 baht if you're not shy. grab some fake gold chains there too, that'll sell the look way more than the hair itself honestly. if you want a full outfit, try Chatuchak on a weekend, there's a stall in section 6 that does vintage shirts and stuff, but Saphan Lek is faster if you're in a rush.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
