Retired here 4 years ago no pension no income nothing at all

Went to tax office and they refused to give me one as i have no income makes sence i suppose

Recently i opened a trading account and have not made any profit to date

My Thai girl says the man at the tax office says if i earn over 3500 baut i need to register

So is this true even though i got trading account i dont need to register

OR do i still need to register this sounds strange to me any help would be appreciated

Does anyone know a good accountant who do small accounts in bkk or even online

nah the tax office was right the first time. if you have zero income in thailand you don't need a tax id, it's that simple. the 3500 baht thing is probably them talking about the monthly threshold for personal income tax but that's for people who actually earn money here, not for a trading account with no profits yet

the thing is once you do make a profit from trading you'd need to register and file. but rn you're fine. i wouldn't go back until you actually sell something at a gain

if you want a second opinion anyway i'd try richard at bkktaxservices in sukhumvit 33, he does simple stuff for expats and can do it online too. just bring your trading statements if you go

The tax office was right the first time. No income here means no need for a tax ID, full stop. The 3500 baht number your girlfriend heard is probably the withholding tax threshold for interest or dividends from a Thai bank account, not something that triggers a registration requirement.

The key thing is when you actually realize a gain from selling something in that trading account. That's when you'd need to go back and register, because the profit would count as assessable income under Thai tax law. But until you sell at a profit, you're not earning anything.

Try contacting Expat Taxes Bangkok on Sukhumvit Soi 49. They handle small accounts for foreigners and can do everything over email or Line, no need to go in person.

Your girlfriend's probably mixing up the 3500 baht thing with the withholding tax threshold for dividends or interest, not for needing a tax ID itself. If you've got no income here at all, the tax office was right to say no.

Once you start seeing actual profits from that trading account, then you'll need to go back and get one. But until you cash out a gain, you're just sitting on paper.

For an accountant, try Siam Legal on Silom Road, they handle expat tax stuff and can do everything through email if you don't want to go in

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
