So many new Techno Clubs in Bangkok have open recently. which one is your favorite?

subwerk is solid for that hard techno fix no doubt, but honestly i'm still most excited about what's happening at mustache bar on sukhumvit 23. it's tiny and the door can be a bit selective but they book a lot of the same underground names as the bigger clubs without the tourist crowd. sound system is way better than the room size suggests and drinks are actually affordable for once, like 120 baht for a singha.

ngl i've been digging into the new spot that opened near ekkamai called "the basement" - it's literally in a basement of an old shophouse and they keep the door policy strict enough that you won't get the sukhumvit tourist crowd stumbling in. sound is a custom rig the owner built himself and the bpm stays around 130-140 without going full hard techno. they do these sunday afternoon sessions called "daylight" that start at 2pm and go til like 9, really chill vibes and the crowd is mostly local producers and djs hanging out.

I have to give it to 12BAR. It's not brand new like Subwerk, but that's part of why I like it. The Funktion-One system there is tuned perfectly for the room, and the crowd tends to be people who actually know their techno rather than just following the hype. Subwerk's sound is massive, no doubt, but sometimes the hard techno nonstop gets a bit one-note for me. 12BAR keeps a darker, more varied vibe that feels more like a proper night out in Berlin.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
