How is the adjustment from the US to Bangkok?

I also practice Buddhism so it would be nice to live in a country where I can explore this more. I know you can't stereotype any group but all the thai people I have interacted with have been some of the sweetest people I have ever met. I am pretty committed to moving to Bangkok, I have been sitting on it for a few months, but I would like to hear some opinions before making that big jump. I live in a medium sized city as of now.

Watching a few youtube videos the city looks really cool and like there is a ton to do. I also like that it is such a major city and there seems to be food from any culture you can imagine. I also like that the people there seem more relaxed than in other major cities. I like big cities but sometimes the tense vibes can be tiring.

I am planning on learning thai, I have been learning some basics for a few weeks now. I know I am not really asking any specific questions, I just want to know if there is anything I should know, What the major culture shocks will be, and if you made that big move what you would tell yourself in the past. I have traveled to most of the US, Canada and a lot of Europe but I have never been to anywhere in Asia.

EDIT: Let me add some details. I have a remote job that is okay money. I can afford to live in a medium sized city but I have wanted to live in a major city like the size of NYC and I cannot afford that unless I want to live in a very bad area. I have looked up the price of a long term visa and I think it is within my means. So financially I think I should be alright. I am more curious about the adjustment. How is the day to day life? How are the people? Is it easy to become friends with locals and other expats? And so on.

Also I understand that youtube videos are not a great way to get a realistic feel for the city. I just don't have many options without actually visiting. If there is any other ways to get a feel for the culture before moving I am all ears.

honestly the biggest shock for me was how loud bangkok is 24/7. like sirens at 3am, dogs barking, street vendors yelling, it never fully stops. but you get used to it fast, and the trade-off is that you can grab pad kra pao off a cart at 4am for 50 baht if you want

for making friends, join a run club or a muay thai gym. the expat scene is huge but can get cliquey, locals are genuinely warm but language barrier is real even with basic thai. my advice is to pick one neighborhood and become a regular somewhere, a coffee shop or a noodle stall, so people start to recognize you

one thing youtube wont show you is how much walking youll do. bts and mrt are great but the heat makes a 15 minute walk feel like 30. bring clothes you can sweat in and dont stress about looking polished your first few months

the buddhist thing will feel natural here. temples are everywhere and most people are casual about it, you can drop into wat pho after work just to sit for a bit. no one judges you for not knowing the rituals

if i could tell past me something itd be to not overplan the first month. just show up, get a condo near an mrt station, and let the city pull you around. the adjustment is real but its not harder than adjusting to a new city

the heat thing is no joke but its also kinda nice in a weird way. like stepping out of the bts into that wall of humidity just forces you to slow down, nobody is rushing anywhere. i came from a place where people walk fast and glare at you if youre in their way, here its the opposite, you just flow

one thing that caught me off guard was how hierarchical everything is. like the way people address each other with khun and the wai greeting, it felt formal at first but now i get it, its just respect. youll mess it up and thats fine, thais are super forgiving about farang not knowing the social rules

for getting a feel before moving, try street view on google maps around sukhumvit or thong lo, then compare it to somewhere like bang khae or rat burana. the city changes block to block way more than any us city. also watch some thai movies or lakorns even if you dont understand, it helps with the vibe

day to day is honestly pretty chill once you figure out your routine. grab coffee at a local shop, work from a co-working space for a few hundred baht, then wander into a random soi for dinner. the chaos is there but it becomes background noise pretty quick

yeah the biggest thing nobody tells you is how much the smell hits you at first. like one block smells like grilled meat and jasmine, next block smells like a drainage ditch, it's wild but you stop noticing after a week. the street food is amazing but your stomach will prob revolt the first few weeks, just roll with it and keep immodium handy

for the buddhist stuff, find a local temple that does meditation sessions in english, there's a few around. Wat Mahathat has sunday talks that are chill and you'll meet other people figuring it out too.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
