What staffs at Seven Eleven say when I walk in?

Image frauke local ·

the staff at my local one on silom soi 2 just say "sawadee ka" but it's so quiet you barely hear it. the cashier there always asks "mii ai rai" (anything else?) before you even finish putting stuff on the counter, it's like a reflex. if you go late night near patpong they're way more chatty, probably bored out of their minds

at the 24 hour one near on nut they just grunt "sawadee" without ka/krup half the time, like theyre conserving energy for the next customer. the morning shift lady is the opposite, she'll say it loud and clear while already scanning your stuff. if you buy a ham and cheese toastie she'll ask "ao?" before you even point at it, they know the drill

ngl it depends on the branch and time of day. the ones near office buildings during lunch rush will just stare at you like "hurry up" while you stare at the drink fridge. i go to the one on ratchada soi 17 and the night guy always says "sawadee krup" but it sounds like he's already half asleep standing up. if you're lucky you'll get the cashier who randomly throws in a "how are you" in english and then goes back to thai for the next person, keeps u guessing

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
