Best place for Christmas dinner in Bangkok?

I've had some good Christmas dinners here and also some awful ones where the chefs / waitresses made minimum effort.

bit late to this but a lot of Thai places do a xmas set now and theyre usually better value than the farang spots. Le Du and a few others on Silom run a special menu xmas day but you need to book like a month out. the smarter move imo is the riverside hotel buffets for the view, not the food, grab a table at like 6pm and watch the boats go by with a plate of mediocre ham.

bourbon st on sukhumvit 50 does a cajun xmas thing, turkey with andouille stuffing & a gumbo starter. sounds weird but it works & its cheaper than the hotel circus, think 1200ish. they only do it xmas eve, not the day itself, so plan around that

If you want to skip the whole roast turkey thing, the Italian places on Sukhumvit 31 do a big Christmas lunch instead. Il Bolognese usually runs a set menu with tortellini in brodo and a proper panettone, way less depressing than a hotel ballroom with a Santa hat on the staff.

Only thing is they get booked solid by mid December so call like now. I went two years back and it was around 1800 baht a head without wine, which is honestly fair for what you get.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
