I visit often during our visa process. Any little reason to need to discipline the children she screams at them. It bothers me tremendously. Its it a culture thing or is it just how she is? She doesn't unnecessarily spank them. Or abuse then physically but can't seem to get over what feel is mental abuse. She over reacts to many things bring up but seems to settle down when ask her to calm down that its not that serious. She never screams at me. I'm soft spoken kind and gentle as my nature. She is very sweet and love her so much but screaming at a kid bc they left their pencil on the floor isn't the right approach in my opinion. What's the best way to discuss this with her where she will understand w/o getting upset at me? l've dropped hints such as speaking as the perspective of the boy and saying...mommy don't yell at me. She doesn't seem to catch on.

I get why this bothers you. The yelling you're seeing is pretty common in Thai households, especially from that generation. It's not seen as mental abuse here the way it would be in the US, it's more like "this is how you get kids to listen." But that doesn't make it right or easy to live with.

Instead of hints or talking right after it happens, try bringing it up during a quiet moment when you're both relaxed, maybe over coffee at the local cafe on Sukhumvit Soi 22. Say something like "I know you love the kids and want them to behave, but I'm struggling with the yelling. Can we try a different approach together?" Frame it as you vs the problem, not you vs her. If she's open to it, suggest a simple consequence system, like taking away screen time instead of raising voices. Thai kids respond well to structure when it's consistent.

honestly, this sounds less like a culture clash and more like she's running on autopilot from how she was raised. a lot of Thai parents just default to loud because that's what their parents did, it's not always anger. maybe try talking to her about the kid's feelings rather than her behavior, like "i feel bad for nong when he gets scared." thais are big on "kreng jai" so if you frame it as you feeling uncomfortable for the kid, she might hear it better than if you criticize her directly. also, hinting never works here

yeah that's a tough one. honestly a lot of Thai parents yell, it's kinda the default way to discipline here. but that doesn't mean it's okay or that you have to accept it. sounds like she might be taking out stress on the kids too, not just culture. maybe try talking when you're both calm, not after she yells. frame it as "I'm worried about the kids" not "you're wrong." say you want to find a way that works for both of you. if she gets defensive just drop it and bring it up again later. t

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
