did JJ pet market moved?

I recall reading somewhere that after the fire at Chatuchak pet are, vendors moved to a new location.

Is that true?

if so, where did they go?

They didn't go far. The pet vendors are now in the old soi 7 area, right off the main ring road, closer to the JJ Mall side than the old spot. It's a proper little zone now, with the same faces behind the counters, so if you had a regular seller before, they're likely still around.

One thing that changed is the layout, it's tighter and more orderly, but you lose the old maze feel where you'd stumble on a litter of puppies by accident. If you're going for fish or reptiles, don't bother with the new section, those are still scattered around the main market, mostly near the ornamental plant area. Take the BTS to Mo Chit and just follow the signs for "Soi 7 Pet Zone" once you're inside, it's about a five minute walk from gate 3.

The pet vendors are indeed in the soi 7 zone now, but here's the thing nobody mentions: the whole area is on borrowed time. Chatuchak's management has been talking about consolidating everything into a proper animal quarter for years, and the current setup feels temporary, like they just crammed everyone into the nearest empty stalls.

If you're going specifically for dogs or cats, the soi 7 spot works fine, but I'd skip it if you're after the old atmosphere. The real hidden gem is the bird sellers, they've actually kept a separate little cluster near the ornamental plant section on the Kamphaengphet side, which is way less crowded and easier to browse. Just don't expect any of the old vendors to recognize you, most of them swapped shifts or brought in new staff after the fire, so it's not quite the same community feel.

One practical tip: the new zone has almost no shade, so if you're hitting it on a hot afternoon, bring water and plan for a quick visit. The stalls are also packed tighter than before, so strollers and big bags are a pain.

True, the fire back in June 2020 basically scattered the old pet area, and the main cluster of vendors ended up in the soi 7 zone near JJ Mall. It's not the same chaotic sprawl as before, but the core sellers for cats, dogs, and birds are all there now, so you won't miss out on the usual suspects.

The bigger change is that the new spot is more of a dedicated strip than a maze, so if you're after that old wandering vibe, you'll be disappointed. For reptiles and fish, forget the soi 7 section entirely, those guys are still dotted around the main market, particularly closer to the ornamental plant side near Kamphaengphet Road. If you're taking the MRT, get off at Kamphaeng Phet station and walk in from that side, it's a shorter walk than coming from Mo Chit.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
