Hi everyone!

So I (German lawyer, 32F) will be working in AIA Sathorn Tower from Jan 1 - March 15.

Can anyone Tell me how I can find an affordable (<30k THB) 30sqm Apartment somewhat closeby?

All the Places on Airbnb are either super tiny or super expensive.

Thanks!

honestly the walk-in advice is solid but let me add one thing, check the bts sathorn skywalk route from chong nonsi to sura sak. theres a bunch of older condo blocks right along that stretch, like the sathorn tower and the sathorn house, that never advertise online. theyre mostly thai tenants so the price is way lower, think 15-20k for a basic 30sqm with a shared pool.

if u want something with a bit more life, look at the edge sathorn or the room sathorn, theyre newish and around 28-32k but u can negotiate for a 2.5 month lease since jan is dead season. just walk into the lobby and ask for the rental office, theyll do a short term contract without the airbnb markup.

also, since ur at aia, the skytrain is ur friend but the walk from chong nonsi to the office is like 7 min in the heat, so maybe grab a condo right on south sathorn road. the sathorn city tower has studios under 25k and theres a 7-eleven in the lobby, which is a lifesaver at 2am.

forget the online listings, walk over to the chong nonsi bts exit 3 and go down soi sathorn 11. there's a bunch of older apartment blocks tucked in there, like the sathorn mansion, that rent to locals for 15-20k. theyre not on any app, just a sign at the gate. thai owners usually want a 6 month min but if u offer cash upfront for 2.5 months they'll often take it, especially in january when everything's empty.

also, the AIA tower itself has a few serviced apartments across the street, the sathorn thani complex. the rooms are dated but huge, 40sqm, and they do monthly corporate rates if u mention ur working at AIA. i think they run around 28k with cleaning included, no lease drama. just ask the front desk for the rental office, theyre used to short term expats.

fwiw a lot of people miss the sathorn soi 1 and soi 3 side, that dead zone between the bts and the river. there's a bunch of walkups there that cater to thai office workers at the nearby embassies, 20-25k gets u a 35sqm with a proper kitchen and a balcony that actually gets sun. no pool but u got the river promenade 10 min away for evening runs.

also for the lease thing, some landlords will do a 2.5 month contract if u pay the full amount upfront and throw in a small non-refundable premium, like 2k. january is dead so they'd rather lock in cash than wait for a yearly tenant. just be clear on the move-out date in writing, verbal agreements in thai rentals are worth nothing.

one more tip, the aia building has a staff canteen on the lower floors that's open to tenants in the adjacent towers. if u end up in a building close enough to walk, u can eat there for 60-80 baht a meal and avoid the 200 baht tourist lunches on sathorn road. not a rental tip but it'll stretch ur budget a bit.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
