Need the real stuff, with no added cane sugar. Looking for trustworthy offline stores or local markets.

honestly if you're after the real deal without the cane sugar cut, hit up Khlong Toei market early morning. there's a specific vendor near the entrance on the Ratchadaphisek side, she's been selling toddy palm sugar for like 30 years, her blocks are dark and crumbly with that smoky caramel smell. for coconut sugar, the big sacks at the back of the market near the spice stalls are usually direct from Samut Songkhram province, just ask for "nam taan maprao sae" and they'll know you want the pure stuff. prices are way better than tourist spots, like 40 baht for a decent block vs 100+ at the malls

Or Tor Kor Market near Mo Chit BTS has a few stalls selling the real stuff. Look for the older vendors near the dried goods section, they usually have blocks of toddy palm sugar wrapped in banana leaves. For coconut sugar, the small jars from Mae Pranom brand are reliable and you can find them at Gourmet Market in Siam Paragon if you want a more convenient spot. Just check the ingredients list, if it says anything other than 100% coconut sap or toddy palm sap, put it back.

the wet market under the talad rot fai train track in srinakarin has a couple of old lady stalls with legit palm sugar blocks, just look for the ones that look kinda rustic and wrapped in leaf ties, not the plastic-wrapped stuff

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
