yeah so the whole male/female/ladyboy thing is just his way of making the tone rules stick. basically high class consonants are "male" because they're the most aggressive with tones, mid class are "female" more neutral, and low class are "ladyboy" because they borrow tones from the others. it's not perfect thai grammar but it's a decent memory hook if you're struggling to remember which consonants trigger which tones.

the actual rule is that high and mid class consonants have fixed tone marks while low class ones shift depending on the word. his system just gives you a visual shortcut so you don't have to memorize the whole chart. honestly if you're learning on your own it's fine but Thai teachers at AUA or Chula would prob cringe at the terminology

if you're in Bangkok and want to practice this stuff, there's a little bookstore near Siam Square called Kinokuniya that has a decent selection of Thai language books. the staff there are pretty helpful and won't judge you for weird mnemonics

oh i remember that video lol. he's basically just using gender stereotypes to label the tone classes cause it's easier to remember than the official terms. high class consonants are "male" cause they're loud and assertive with tones, mid class are "female" cause they're more neutral, and low class are "ladyboy" cause they borrow tones from the other two. it's pretty silly but it stuck in my head faster than the actual chart tbh

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
