Thai speakers- can you explain what the rapidlearnthai guy in the youtube is saying about a memory trick labeling each letter as male, female, or ladyboy? I'm guessing this will somehow relate to to high, mid, and low class consonants but I don't see what

yeah so the whole male/female/ladyboy thing is just his way of making the tone rules stick. basically high class consonants are "male" because they're the most aggressive with tones, mid class are "female" more neutral, and low class are "ladyboy" because they borrow tones from the others. it's not perfect thai grammar but it's a decent memory hook if you're struggling to remember which consonants trigger which tones.

the actual rule is that high and mid class consonants have fixed tone marks while low class ones shift depending on the word. his system just gives you a visual shortcut so you don't have to memorize the whole chart. honestly if you're learning on your own it's fine but Thai teachers at AUA or Chula would prob cringe at the terminology

a more standard way to think about it is that high and mid class consonants have their own tone rules while low class consonants borrow tones from the others. so when you see a low class consonant with a tone mark, the tone mark means something different than it would for a high or mid class one. the memory trick just helps you remember which ones are which without memorizing the full chart

if you're in Bangkok and want to practice this stuff, there's a little bookstore near Siam Square called Kinokuniya that has a decent selection of Thai language books. the staff there are pretty helpful and won't judge you for weird mnemonics

oh i remember that video lol. he's basically just using gender stereotypes to label the tone classes cause it's easier to remember than the official terms. high class consonants are "male" cause they're loud and assertive with tones, mid class are "female" cause they're more neutral, and low class are "ladyboy" cause they borrow tones from the other two. it's pretty silly but it stuck in my head faster than the actual chart tbh

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
