honestly you guys are sleeping on samut prakan for the food alone. the khao man gai at that old shop near the bts at samrong station is legendary, like the owner has been making it since the 80s and it shows. plus the whole area around the pak nam market has this chaotic energy where you can buy live crabs off a boat one minute and sit down for a bowl of guay jap the next. it's not pretty but it's real and that matters more to me than the polished stuff

samut prakan honestly. the ancient city (muang boran) is worth the trip alone, you can spend a whole day walking around the giant scaled-down temples and ruins. also the mangroves at bang pu are a nice escape, just feed the seagulls and eat grilled seafood by the pier. it feels less like a suburb and more like its own thing

ngl i've been spending more time in nonthaburi lately and it's growing on me. the whole area around pak kret has this old school vibe where the wooden houses are still standing and you can take a ferry across to ko kret for a day trip. the pottery there is handmade and cheap, like 50 baht for a little cup, and the khao tom pla at the market near the pier is some of the best i've had. it's not flashy but it's got a rhythm that feels like thailand 30 years ago

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
