How to find a babysitter?

Kiidu and the other agency apps are priced for expat families, that's just how it is. The local route is usually through your building's juristic office or a neighbor, since a lot of Thai families in condo buildings already have a regular nanny or part time helper who'll take an evening gig for 100 to 150 baht an hour, sometimes less for a group because the kids entertain each other. Ask the front desk, the cleaners, or the parents you see at the playground in the evening, word of mouth is how most Thais actually hire.

For two sitters watching several kids, expect to pay more like 800 to 1200 baht each for the whole evening rather than hourly, that's the norm for a one off babysitting job and it's what a university student or a moo baan mom would accept. If you want a layer of safety without agency prices, ask a local school or a relative of someone you already trust, and have them come meet the kids beforehand. I'd still vet whoever you pick, but you don't need Kiidu to do that.

honestly the group angle changes things. for 2 sitters and a pack of kids you're basically hiring a pii liang dek for the evening, and the going rate most thai families pay is a flat 500 to 800 total per person for like 5 or 6 hours, not per hour. the hourly number only shows up when agencies quote farang.

one route people sleep on is uni students. post in the Line groups or FB pages for education or child development faculties at Chula, Kasetsart, Srinakharinwirot. students doing early childhood or nursing will take an evening gig for 600 to 900 flat, they actually know how to handle kids, and you get a paper trail of who they are. meet them once first with your kids around, thats the vetting.

also don't overlook the moo baan or condo helper who already cleans for a thai family on your soi. she wont advertise but ask her directly, cash in hand, and she'll often bring a friend. way cheaper than any app and you already know she shows up.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
