Did I make a mistake by living in Phloen Chit, Bangkok?

There aren't many affordable restaurants around, and the area lacks that local vibe and authentic experience I was hoping to get in Bangkok.

I was aiming for a more traditional, Thai lifestyle but it feels too upscale and modern here. Has anyone else experienced this? My contract is for 3 months here.

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated!

nah u didn't mess up, phloen chit is just a different side of bangkok. it's basically the embassy district, so yeah it's gonna feel sterile and pricey. but ur 3 months is plenty to get the local vibe elsewhere, just take the bts a few stops. get off at chit lom and walk towards lang suan, or hop to phrom phong and hit the soi 31/33 area for proper street food. for the full thai experience, take a weekend and go to yaowarat or the old town around khao san, it's a 20 min grab ride and feels like a whole different city.

also, don't sleep on the office worker lunch spots around wireless road, they're hidden in those small lanes and charge like 50 baht for a solid khao gaeng. ur building might be fancy but the streets behind it have actual life, just gotta walk a bit further than the main road. honestly, living in a nice spot and venturing out is the best combo, u get the comfort and the chaos when u want it. give it another week before judging.

You didn't make a mistake, you just landed in the diplomatic bubble. Phloen Chit is basically Bangkok's version of a gated corporate park, it's not representative of the city at all. The good news is your building's location is actually a secret weapon, the BTS at your doorstep means you can be in a proper neighborhood in 10 minutes.

For the local life you're craving, skip the obvious tourist traps and head to Ari or Ekkamai. Ari especially has that mix of trendy cafes and actual street stalls where you'll see Thai families eating, not just expats. Get off at Ari station, walk down Soi Ari 1 and you'll find a night market vibe with grilled pork skewers for 10 baht and a local vibe that feels nothing like your street.

Also, don't underestimate the power of your own soi. Walk past the fancy hotel entrances and into the smaller lanes behind them, there are usually workers' canteens and mom and pop shops hiding there. You'll find a solid pad kaprao for 60 baht if you know where to look. Three months is short enough that you should treat your apartment as a base camp, not a neighborhood, and you'll be fine.

honestly phloen chit's not a mistake, it's just the wrong lens. your building's location is actually perfect for hitting the real bangkok if you stop relying on what's walkable and start using the canal boats. the khlong saen saep pier is like a 5 min walk from ploen chit bts, and it drops you right at baan krua near nana, that's a whole community of silk weavers and tiny food stalls that's been there forever. 5 baht for the boat ride, feels proper local.

also, don't sleep on the soi behind the arabic food street on suk soi 3/1, there's a muslim thai restaurant that's been running for decades, they do a killer massaman for like 80 baht and it's packed with locals at lunch. your 3 months is short, so just treat this spot as a launchpad, not a lifestyle. you'll find the chaos when you want it.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
